Types of Greenhouses at Allan Gardens

Tropical Houses

Head down south to the tropical jungles of the equator in this luscious greenhouse. Featuring stunning paradise plants from top destination countries such as Brazil, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Temperate House

Visit the temperate greenhouse to see rotating flowering plant displays throughout the year. They even have a winter flowering show in December! There’s never a bad time to get married at this venue.

Orchid and Bromeliad House

Are you an energetic, vibrant soul who wants plants to match your energy? Surround yourself with the gorgeous colourful displays of orchids and bromeliads. What an amazing greenhouse for wedding photography and makes it look like you had a destination wedding!

Palm House

Immerse yourself in the feeling of a warm vacation in their large palm tree collection. Some even tower over you and touch the ceiling! Makes for amazing Toronto wedding photos.

Arid House

Escape to the warm vibes of the desert in the arid greenhouse. This area has a large collection of cacti and succulents such as agave, aloe and haworthia. This is definitely my favourite type of greenhouse.

History

The main building that you see today at the Allan Gardens was built in 1910. The Conservatory was originally founded in 1858 but unfortunately, a fire in 1902 destroyed much of the existing buildings. It was designed by Toronto architect, Robert McCallum. In 2004, it added its Children’s Conservatory which hosts botanical programs for kids but unfortunately is not open to the public. Allan Gardens gets its name from George Allan who offered the land to the Toronto Horticultural Society for the construction of a garden. Almost a decade after the gift of land from Allan the city purchased his surrounding land and gave it to the Society. Their only stipulation was that it must be free and accessible for all visitors. The Gardens have grown quite a lot from its early days inquiring 13 more acres and 2 wings to house more gardens.
